Remedies For Migraines
There are as many remedies for migraines as there are causes for migraines, and some of them can be simple home remedies and others are by prescription only from your doctor. So we will explore some of the remedies for migraines from both the home remedy category and the prescription medicines category as well.
Natural Remedies For Migraines
Oenothera, or Primrose oil as it is commonly known originates from north and south America. It is an excellent plant which is used in remedies for migraines, it helps with the pain during menstruation, and there have been many tests carried out recently which have shown it may be useful for treatment of some breast cancers, although these tests are still in their infancy.
Primrose oil has been found to be effective with the treatment of migraine due to its anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce the narrowing of the tiny bloods vessels around the forehead. There are a few side effects reported from taking primrose oil though, and these are intestinal gas, itchy skin and mild sore throats, although not everyone experinces any side effects when taking it.
A Chinese mushroom known as Cordyceps is another of the good remedies for migraines, and it has also been used for centuries in China to treat some forms of cancer. Tests have shown that Cordyceps also has properties which reduce levels of stress or anxiety which in turn helps to induce relaxed sleep. It is a medicinal fungi that also shows great promise for protecting the bone marrow and the digestive system when it was tested on mice, and was also shown to protect the liver as well.
But more tests will be needed to determine if it will work in humans. Other uses for Cordyceps may be as an anti-depressant and also it may be useful for people who have an insulin resistance since it was discovered that it has hypoglycemic properties as well. So this is an excellent candidate for remedies for migraines as it can help to reduce that stress and anxiety that can trigger some migraines.
Feverfew as it is commonly known has been another of the more promising remedies for migraines used for centuries in parts of Europe to treat migraines, headaches, skin problems, difficult child labour, pre-menstrual tension, stomach aches and pains, and arthritis.
Although feverfew should not be taken during pregnancy or by children under two years of age, it is very effective for treating migraines in 70 per cent of those people who were tested. Feverfew can br purchased in any good health
food store in the form of capsules or tablets to swallow, or as fresh or dried leaves and as a liquid extract.
Remedies For Migraines, Medicinal
Medicinal treatments or remedies for migraines usually begin with medicines such as analgesics for the head pain, then the nausea is often treated with an antiemetic. The sufferer will need to keep a diary to try to discover what triggers the migraines, since every individual is different with what causes their migraines.
Many sufferers have too low a level of seratonin present, and so doctors will often prescribe Triptans that stop the migraine before it really starts, and it will
help to balance the level of seratonin in the sufferer, therefore preventing the migraine from fully developing.
Many doctors prefer to prescribe preventative remedies for migraines, these are taken daily to stop any migraines from even starting. However many of these drugs seem to have some pretty unpleasant side effects for many people. The preventative medications include, Propranolol, atenolol, and metoprolol which are beta blockers, or anti-depressants such as tricyclic anti-depressants.
However, there has been much success with medical remedies for migraines, by using a lower dose of daily aspirin which seems to help those who are pre-disposed to migraines because there is a genetic family trait of sufferers. So we have explored some of the natural remedies for migraines and also some of the more medical remedies for migraines, and anyone who suffers badly is advised to go to their doctor for some blood tests, advice or maybe even a scan if the doctor considers it advisable.
